| Michael McGuirk
Development Director and Program Manager
Michael McGuirk received his MA in International Economics
and Development from the Johns
Hopkins School
for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and his BA in History with a minor in
Economics from UC San Diego. In the year
between UCSD and SAIS, Michael spent three months volunteering in Rabinal, Guatemala
to organize health fairs and coordinate youth groups to create sustainable,
community-led change. He has also worked
several years with the Clorox Company, managing a social initiative to
disinfect drinking water for ultra-poor rural communities in Peru. He is fluent in Spanish and conversational in
Italian and French, and he loves to ski and play ultimate frisbee.
Trevor Brooks Vietnam Intern, 2010-11
Trevor Brooks is a graduate from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Sciences in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Trevor developed a passion for research through laboratory based studies focusing on obesity-related genes and Wnt-signaling using the fruit fly model organism. Trevor recently spent 8 months studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina and backpacking through South America, and is excited to immerse himself in the Vietnamese lifestyle. He has worked as a camp counselor for three summers and as a tutor for underprivileged children in Detroit, so he looks forward to helping children in under-resourced areas. After his internship in Vietnam, Trevor plans to apply to combined MD/PhD programs and pursue a career in academic medicine or pediatrics.
Alex Miller KCE Vietnam Intern, 2010-11
Alex Miller recently graduated from Colorado College with a BA in Neuroscience and is trained as an Emergency Medical Technician. He has always been fascinated by biological systems and hopes to translate this interest into a career in global healthcare; specifically working in nations who lack medical info-structure. Alex believes education and information access are the most effective tools for enacting long term change, an objective he shares with KidsCareEverywhere. Alex’s international focus stems from the extensive time he has spent in Thailand and Laos. He is an intrepid traveler who enjoys immersing himself in other societies and bridging cultural gaps, particularly through culinary means. When confined to the United States, Alex’s adventurous spirit is expressed through his fervor for outdoor recreation.
