The KidsCareEverywhere team is a group of physicians, healthcare professionals and children’s health advocates who dedicate themselves to KidsCareEverywhere’s mission of transforming pediatric care in under-resourced communities.
Board of Directors
Ron Dieckmann, MD, MPH
Founder and Executive Director
Dr. Dieckmann was educated at Harvard, Stanford Medical School, and the Berkeley School of Public Health. He is a Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Medicine at University of California, San Francisco and was the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital for 25 years. Triple board certified in pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and general emergency medicine, Dr. Dieckmann has edited five first edition medical textbooks, is a frequent speaker at national and international medical conferences, and has received national awards for service to American medical education and training. In 2003, he co-founded “PEMSoft-The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Software”, a decision-support software knowledge system which is now owned by EBSCO Publishing in Ipswich, MA. His international family travels led him to found KidsCareEverywhere, and to donate medical software to impoverished health systems in the low income world.
Denis McGuirk
Board Treasurer
Denis McGuirk is a retired CPA who served 32 years as a financial and accounting leader at various financial institutions, including Citibank and American Express. Denis’ career spanned many areas of finance, including analysis of financial data relative to merger candidates, new product introductions, profitability studies, as well as traditional cost and staffing issues, and budgeting. Most recently, he worked as Vice President of Finance at Charles Schwab. He also served as Treasurer for the Friends of the Oakland Fox Theater, a nonprofit organization that raised millions to revitalize a beautiful, historic Art Deco building. He has both CPA and CMA credentials and obtained his BS from Manhattan College in NY. An avid traveler, skier and boater, tennis player and photographer, Denis spends time pursuing these with his wife and four children.
Trevor Brooks, MD
Board Director
Dr. Trevor Brooks grew up in the East Bay and earned his Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. He then joined KidsCareEverywhere as a fellow where he spent six months in Vietnam training physicians to use PEMSoft and studying its effectiveness. This was a formative experience in his life and confirmed medicine as his calling. He went on to attend medical school at the University of California – San Francisco where he continued his work in global health. He completed another project in Vietnam and was appointed a Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellow for a year-long research project in Honduras on Dengue Fever and Zika. He graduated residency in Family Medicine with a concentration in Tropical Medicine at PIH Hospital in Whittier, CA, where he was chief resident and spent time in Makeni, Sierra Leone working in a hospital and training the staff. After gaining certification from the American Board of Family Medicine, he began working as a hospitalist in Los Angeles before moving back to the Bay Area, where he currently practices at Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek. His interests outside of medicine are wide ranging, including traveling, gardening, snowboarding, golf, reading both fiction and non-fiction, and backpacking. He resides in Piedmont with his wife Sarah.
Margie Hogan, MD
Board Director
Dr. Marjorie (Margie) Hogan is a pediatrician, world adventurer, and outdoorswoman. She recently retired after over 40 years of medical practice in the Twin Cities. Margie trained at Stanford Medical School and the University of Minnesota, has been board certified in both general pediatrics and adolescent medicine and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. In addition to serving kids and teens of all ages, she has other major interests and expertise in medical education, the impact of media, and child maltreatment. Working at the front lines of a large, busy urban hospital, Hennepin Healthcare, allowed her to follow her passion--caring for underserved children and families, including refugees and immigrants (from every part of the world). She and her husband Dr. David Griffin have traveled to Nicaragua for many years to work with children and teach medicine. In retirement: she is volunteering as a Master Naturalist in Minnesota; teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) to adult immigrants and refugees; and mentoring and teaching medicine through the University of Minnesota. She loves hiking, biking, and traveling, and her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, and friend.
Drew Kemp
Board Director
Charles D. (Drew) Kemp is a recently retired engineer, looking for new adventures after a 28 year career in precision opto-mechanical engineering at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he conducted all manner of research in the field of X-Ray Optics and Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography. He is also a pilot and flight Instructor. Growing up in Berkeley, Drew earned his Private Pilot’s certificate at the age of 17, while attending Berkeley High School. He achieved his basic and advanced First Aid and CPR certificates in college at UC Davis, and immediately put them into practice with the National Ski Patrol as a volunteer ski patrolman at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort. He first met Dr. Ron Dieckmann as soccer dads, and they soon began working together as a medical team, along with their young daughters, with the Flying Samaritans organization at their medical clinic in Northern Baja, Mexico. In 2013, Drew served as the Co-Chair of the KidsCareEverywhere Gala, and along with his wife, Leslie produced the stunning video presentation for the event. When he is not flying, you are likely to find Drew at home in the El Cerrito Hills, working on his never-ending patio/deck project, or playing the electric guitars that he builds by hand.
Monica McMillan, MD
Board Director
Dr. Monica McMillan is board certified in Emergency Medicine and a Diplomate of the American College of Emergency Physicians. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors Engineering from The United States Military Academy at West Point and her Doctorate of Medicine from Dartmouth Medical School, then completed an emergency medicine residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. Dr. McMillan is currently the Director of Emergency Medical Services (PreHospital Care) and Pediatric Care Coordinator for the Emergency Department at Mercy Medical Center in Merced, California. Passionate about improving the quality of health care for impoverished children, she loves bringing the latest medical technology to resource-limited countries. Dr. McMillan has trained hundreds of physicians on three continents in utilization of decision support software. She is a nature enthusiast, surfer, motorcyclist and world traveler.
Victor Silvestre, MD
Board Director
Dr. Victor Silvestre is a retired internal medicine doctor from the Salud en Español (“Latino”) clinic at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California. He was born in Miami, Florida of Cuban parents who emigrated and met in Miami in the mid 1940’s. Vic moved to California in 1973, where he attended U.C. Berkeley. In 1980, he graduated from University of Michigan Medical School, and returned to California for residency training and to resettle in the East Bay. After 18 years running a private practice, he moved his doctors and staff to Kaiser, where he has served in many roles– in patient safety, staff development, coaching and teaching, and as a Senior Medical Consultant for difficult cases. For leisure, Vic enjoys friends and family, music, hiking, skiing, travel and riding his Harley-Davidson.
Eric Snoey, MD
Board Director
Dr. Snoey was educated at the University of Michigan where he received his MD and BS in Biomedical Sciences. He is currently Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine at the Alameda Health System – Highland Hospital in Oakland, California, and a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Snoey lectures nationally and internationally on a broad array of topics related to emergency medicine. He is also director of Graduate Medical Education for the Highland Medical Center, overseeing over 150 interns and residents. Dr. Snoey has worked extensively throughout Africa and Central America in the arena of international health. A founding member of Doctors of the World, USA, he served on their board of directors for over a decade. Currently, Dr. Snoey remains engaged in human rights work by performing medical affidavits for torture victims seeking asylum – work he began in 1989 while treating political detainees in apartheid South Africa. In 2013, Dr. Snoey and his two sons spent 2 months traveling in Senegal, Morocco and Namibia as ambassadors for KCE.
Opal Taylor, MD, MPH
Board Director
Dr. Taylor practices emergency medicine at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California. She was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone and grew up in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, where her early education was in French. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, she earned a masters degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins, with a focus on Humanitarian Assistance and Refugee Studies. She then completed her emergency medicine residency, as well as specialized training certificate in ultrasound, at Highland General Hospital, Alameda County Regional Medical Center, Oakland, California. Dr. Taylor is passionate about care for the underserved in the US and around the world, and has served on multiple medical missions abroad. She is a presently a faculty member of the Global Ultrasound Institute—a nonprofit organization that teaches ultrasound to healthcare providers throughout the world. She seeks to empower healthcare providers in resource-limited settings with the latest ultrasound technology to enhance quality of care. She is also a proud mother to her eight-year old son. In her spare time she is training for a half-ironman triathlon event and is competing on a masters swim team.

Marlowe Dieckmann, MD, MPH

Marlowe Dieckmann received her Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Psychology from Smith College and her Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley. She attended medical school at the University of Louisville where she also completed a special concentration in Global Health. She has worked and volunteered for KidsCareEverywhere since 2007. She served as one of KCE’s first interns in Vietnam and Cambodia in Summer 2007. Since then, she has volunteered and/or worked for KidsCareEverywhere in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Vietnam. She conducted a utilization/feasibility analysis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania at Muhimbili Hospital. Marlowe is now an attending physician in family medicine in Grass Valley, California but continues to consult part-time for KidsCareEverywhere.
Claudia Espinosa, MD

Dr. Claudia Espinosa is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. She is originally from Cali, Colombia and earned her Doctorate of Medicine from the Universidad del Cauca in Popayan, Colombia. Dr. Espinosa is faculty at the University of Florida where she has clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities. She participates in the EBM curriculum, the Health Research Unit, and the Global Health Track in addition to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she spends time developing protocols and helping with infection control issues. She frequently attends Pediatric and Infectious Diseases local and national meetings where she presents her research work. She enjoys traveling especially with her daughter who already wants to be a physician in a resource limited setting. Dr. Espinosa has been a key figure in the work of KCE in Latin America.
Richard Gaskin
Advisory Board Member
Richard Gaskin is the owner of Fourth World Systems, a software design and development consultancy in Los Angeles, California. Since founding the company in 1994 he’s developed dozens of applications used by a wide range of organizations, including FedEx, AOL, the US Library of Congress, and hundreds of hospitals and universities around the world. When he’s not making software he enjoys backpacking in the Mojave desert, where he’s contributed to documenting an archaeology site.
Haile Girma
Advisory Board Member
Haile Girma helped found KidsCareEverywhere in 2007 and has been a critical advisor to the organization since its beginnings. He has almost 30 years of professional business experience, primarily auditing and consulting in the nonprofit and government sectors. He was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and left at age 20 due to the political turmoil at the time and has lived in the United States since the late 70’s. After graduating from Berkeley business school, Haile started his career with Coopers & Lybrand LLP (now PriceWaterhouse Coopers) where he served as an audit manager. He has also served as an audit partner with Williams, Adley & Company, LLP before starting Haile Girma & Co. in 1997. He lives in the Oakland Hills with his wife Marsha Rose. They have two children. Haile loves music, gardening, gourmet food and international travel.
David Griffin, MD, MsX

Dr. David Griffin received a BA from Harvard College in History and Science and followed with an MD at Stanford Medical School. After a pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota, he subsequently received a management degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Medicine. Along with a general pediatric practice, he has been a medical director of HealthPartners health plan with a specific interest in underserved populations. He and his wife, Dr. Marjorie Hogan, have traveled to Nicaragua on several medical missions with a group from Minneapolis. His non-medical interests include bicycling, hiking and visiting his and Margie’s far flung children and grandchildren.
Tu Nguyen, MD

Dr. Tu Van Nguyen was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, as the son of two nurses who met during the French-Vietnamese conflict. He grew up during the American conflict and served in the Vietnamese Air Force as a helicopter attendant. Inspired to become a physician by the needless deaths he witnessed during the war, in 1980 he began medical school in Ho Chi Minh City. Tu returned to Hanoi, in 1986, finished his specialist studies at Hanoi Medical School, then began his long career in pediatric intensive care. He is now the Vice Director of the pediatric intensive care unit in the National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi, the major referral center for pediatrics in Southeast Asia. Tu has two daughters, Mai and Linh and his wife Ngoc works as a ENT nurse. He has been a principal advocate and teacher for KCE and is striving to greatly expand distribution of the DynaMed software in Vietnam.
Satwant Singh, MD

Satwant Singh is a Professor Emeritus in Medicine (Nephrology) at the University of
Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH. He obtained his medical degree and Internal
Medicine training at the Government Medical College, Amritsar, India. He did a
fellowship in Nephrology in the USA and has served on the faculty of the University of
Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati OH for more than 48 years. He devoted his career
to patient care and teaching and training tens of thousands of students, hundreds of
residents, and over 120 fellows in Nephrology. He won numerous teaching awards at
his institution along with the Master Teacher Award of the American College of
Physicians. He was recognized as an Exemplary Physician by the University Hospital,
Cincinnati OH. He is very active in the community and founded several civic
organizations in Cincinnati. He is extremely active in the Amritsar Medical and Dental
Alumni Association of North America (AMDAANA) and has led its AMDAANA Amritsar
project since 2004. Under his aegis, AMDAANA undertook several projects at his alma
mater which has greatly enhanced education and patient care there. He accompanied
the KCE team to India three times in the past few years.
Fran Schreiberg

Fran is a retired Bay Area attorney specializing in occupational safety and health. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her law degree from New York University School of Law. Fran’s prodigious career has spanned many areas of law practice, and her professional life has centered on public regulatory agencies, nonprofit organizations for the underserved and working class, and law school education. Her jobs have ranged from the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, Cal/OSHA, a professorship at the University of San Francisco School of Law, stints as a public defender in several jurisdictions, and legal counsel for the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California — the umbrella organization for building trades unions in California. Fran founded Worksafe, a visionary and influential California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating workplace hazards. Her current work focuses on legislative, regulatory and policy matters as well as impact litigation. She is admitted to the State Bars of New York and California.

Kerry McCulloch, MPH
Associate Director
As Associate Director, Kerry McCulloch is responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of KCE's DynaMed Training program across all core sites. She collaborates with partner country health leadership to ensure projects are sustainable, culturally relevant, and realistic. She coordinates project logistics with KCE volunteers and partner sites. Kerry holds an MPH in Epidemiology and a Graduate Global Health Certificate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a BS in Biology from the University of Oregon.
Bianca Maron

Bianca Maron is a premed student with a career interest in global health. She started as a KCE global health fellow in 2016 working in Peru and advanced to KCE Program Director. Bianca has been responsible for organizing trips to countries, preparing our teams, arranging logistics with the hospital leaders, and facilitating the trainings by our physician instructors. She has traveled with KCE on three continents and represented KCE at at the Annual American Public Health Association Meeting and the Annual Consortium of Universities for Global Health Conference.

From its very beginnings in 2007, KidsCareEverywhere has been committed to the education and training of future global health professionals. Our organization has been constantly engaged in providing supervised training experiences in the United States, and in impoverished countries of Asia, Africa and South America, for select individuals wishing to pursue careers in global health.

Each year, fellows join KCE to acquire global health leadership skills and to help improve children’s health in impoverished countries worldwide. Their primary tasks during the 1 month/3-4 month or year long fellowship are evaluating and understanding the utilization and bedside application of our mobile software DynaMed Plus, in public hospitals. Fellows are also involved in publishing scholarly articles and posters as well as presentations in global health conferences. The following fellows have already received KidsCareEverywhere mentorship and have all continued on to medical school, technology positions, and other careers associated with global health.

Malena Outhay, MD
Global Health Fellow, Bolivia 2019
Malena is an Emergency Medicine physician at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA. She attended Hendrix College, where her travels to Peru, Costa Rica, Peru, and India ignited her interest in global health. During her time at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, she helped implement trauma first responder programs in Mozambique and Ethiopia. In 2015-2016, she served as a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow in Mirebalais, Haiti, where she helped launch Haiti's first ever Emergency Medicine residency.

Elaine Yang, MD
Global Health Fellow, Peru 2018
Elaine is an Emergency Medicine physician at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA. Her interest in global health began while she was studying Anthropology at University of Pennsylvania, when she studied health outcomes in an indigenous group in northern Argentina. She then attended University of Southern California for medical school, where she fell in love with the vibrant international community of East Los Angeles. She is proud to be back home serving the Bay Area, and served on a journey to Lima with KCE.
Thomas E. Wallach, MD

Dr. Wallach is a San Francisco based pediatrician in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of California San Francisco. He complete his pediatric residency at Columbia University, New York, NY, and has held staff positions as an attending pediatrician at NYU and with the Pediatric Evening Referral Clinic of San Francisco. He completed his medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, and his bachelors degree at Pomona College, Los Angeles, CA. He is initially from Washington, DC.

Amarinder Singh, MD

Dr. Amarinder Singh accompanied KCE to Amritsar, India in February 2017. Dr. Singh is an accomplished Highland Hospital emergency medicine physician who is a California native with family roots in Amritsar. This connection to the Indian site made him a valuable asset and strong advocate for KCE’s involvement in the area. With these two esteemed fellows KCE is looking forward to a year of great progress and advancement of our mission for children in these two disadvantaged, global locations.

Bianca Maron

Mindy Le
Global Health Fellow, Vietnam 2014
ThanhPhuong “Mindy” Le graduated from CSU East Bay with a major in Biological Science and a minor in Chemistry in 2012. While in school, Mindy participated in meaningful career exposure programs that solidified her interest in the field of medicine. Since graduation, she has worked alongside a well-known neurologist in San Jose, CA and has learned to appreciate one-on-one patient interactions and the complexity of the healthcare system. Because of her strong belief in the power of prevention, she wishes to gain experience in clinical research and public health prior to her application to medical school. Mindy’s ultimate career goal is to become a compassionate and competent surgeon serving children from underserved backgrounds, especially those suffering from birth defects.
Nneka Okeke
Global Health Fellow, Vietnam 2014
Nneka Okeke recently graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Urban Studies and Planning and Health Education. Before receiving the KidsCareEverywhere/EBSCO Global Health Fellowship, Nneka was a SHARP Scholar at the HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Section at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Nneka developed a passion for children’s health, healthcare service delivery, and interventions after being selected to be a field assistant for ACHIEVE 2, a project with the University of California, San Francisco and the Society for Family Health in Nigeria. After the fellowship, Nneka plans to apply to PhD programs in Epidemiology and pursue a career in public health research.

Trevor Brooks, MD

Trevor Brooks was a KidsCareEverywhere fellow to Vietnam from October 2010 to April 2011. Trevor graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Sciences in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Prior to the KCE internship, Trevor conducted laboratory-based obesity research and worked as a camp counselor and tutor for underprivileged children in Detroit. Reflecting on the internship experience, Trevor says that he took away “an awe at the interconnectedness of the world and a drive to continue to travel the world in my future career.” He is currently a family medicine physician in Los Angeles with plans to continue his passion in global health.
Alex Miller
Global Health Fellow, Vietnam 2011
Alex Miller was a KidsCareEverywhere fellow to Vietnam from October 2010 to April 2011. Alex graduated from Colorado College with a BA in Neuroscience and is trained as an Emergency Medical Technician. After spending 6 months in Vietnam and learning how valuable software tools can be for clinicians, Alex has dedicated the last few years to building applications for clinicians, patients, and hospitals in the US. Alex is currently managing product for Sirono, a healthcare software startup in San Francisco. His current product brings together design and technology to inject transparency and flexibility into the medical billing process.

Paget Allis, MD
2007 Global Health Fellow Vietnam and Cambodia
Paget Allis was a KCE fellow in Vietnam and Cambodia in 2007. Before that she had been working for the San Francisco Dept. of Public Health in the Microbiology Laboratory. After traveling internationally with KCE, she started Medical School at St. George’s University. She is currently a family medicine physician still interested in global health.
